ABOUT THE FARMS

a unique circular ecosystem

The Farms™ is developing a unique ecosystem consisting of a series of food related infrastructures and programs which contributes to empower food security amongst global communities, while addressing the important aspect of food waste. More importantly, its different initiatives aim to demonstrate that it is possible to grow locally the healthiest food, using relevant cultivation technologies and bio farming techniques, in a fully sustainable fashion, with a low carbon footprint, while achieving a price point that is affordable for everyone.

The Farms elected the United Arab Emirates to become the launchpad of its programs and platforms as the country offers the optimal conditions to support and enable the development of such needed ecosystem.

This becomes the foundation of a blueprint to be emulated and scaled globally.

Chosen technologies are deployed in an efficient way where only the benefits on yields, profitability and on the health of the plants are considered. Our objectives is to develop a series of smaller food production assets, connected to their immediate markets, leveraging current infrastructures, while creating the path towards the deployment of technology in micro and bio farming and know-how to households.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE BLUEPRINT

This holistic vision will greatly contribute to Abu Dhabi’s ambition to lead progress and foster collaborations to strengthen and empower Global Food Security. The obvious synergies between Abu Dhabi Food Security Strategy and The Farms™’ are of no coincidence. The Farms™ is designed to be a catalyst in support of the UAE strategic plan to become more resilient in terms of food supply.

The following summarizes how The Farms™ will act in support of each component of the UAE strategic planning towards achievement of National Food Security.

  • Support the UAE on achieving its Target on Global Food Security Index;
  • Realize CO2 reduction across the board;
  • Fill the gap of food waste management, creating opportunity to partner with the government developing energy from wastes to power food production system in a fully circular way;
  • Economic and Monetary Impact: Local Job Creation and optimal use of fossil fuel
  • Build Human Resources Capacity through ensuring transfer of knowledge;
  • Involve existing local ecosystem as key actors in building this new economic sector;
  • Become a center of vocational training for future agrotechnicians and micro bio-farmers, in support of the Emiratisation policy, becoming capable to export expertise globally;
  • Support the National Agenda for R&D in food security through inhouse R&D laboratory that will give access to a platform (trilogy of farms) to test innovations at scale;
  • Support the development of the national food security database through data aggregator for food production and bio-waste management, linked to world’s leading suppliers, universities and academia to provide feedback and improve efficiency;
  • Enabling community engagement and behaviors shifts through experience sharing, technology emulation and education;
  • Exercise global leadership in the field by building food production capacity, innovations, bio waste valuation, and supply chain management

Not only will The Farms™ empower the production of healthy food, but it will more importantly engage in an ongoing dialogue with all stakeholders, creating value beyond just food.

The World’s first fully circular economy for food security

Circular Economy a sought after model of reference to better manage our planet’s resources and to find new ways to generate value in our society. The global shift towards more circular initiatives is pressing, and all stakeholders are now conscious of the necessity to move away from linear approach of creating, consuming and disposing consumables. Most developed countries and private corporations play an increasing role and leadership to foster, support and develop such circular initiatives. The Farms™ mission is to enable such circular model around the topics of sustainable local food production and food waste valuation. Countries such as the United Arab Emirates have a very clear vision and ambition to lead the pace toward global sustainability and have developed several policies and programs to promote the development of such economies under its watch.

Innovation powered by ancestral Knowledge: where technology meets traditional agriculture

Although innovation, robotics, genetics, engineering, waste management and data science are the ultimate enablers of the new era in agriculture, The Farms™ firmly believes that this new era must be powered and grounded into ancestral knowledge. In other words, the “ag” of agtech must remain present throughout and alongside the innovation process.

The mixed crop-livestock systems is a key concept to traditional farming. The relationship between a crop production system and a livestock production system is a crucial part of maintaining ecological balance and is the base of a self-sufficient model. It is also the cornerstone of understanding the environmental impact of food production systems.

Environmental sustainability means to not exceed its own regenerative capacity or its absorptive capacity and is about managing the in and outflows of natural resources in a given system. In the new era of agro-technology, one must innovate with the ultimate goal of resolving these dilemmas, and addressing the bigger picture rather than just focusing on the local aspect of food production.

The Ensō, often referred to as the Infinity Circle, represents the ever-evolving nature of the world in which we live.

The point at which the brush first touches the paper represents the beginning of life, and where the brush stroke leaves the paper, the end of life. The Ensō is often interpreted as the wheel of birth, death, and rebirth.

This continuous circle of life is the
foundation of The Farms™.
